1. Prepare the Tub/Basin:
Ensure the sitz bath tub or a large basin is clean. It should be large enough to immerse your hips and buttocks.

2. Fill with Water:
Start by filling the tub with warm water, up to a level that will immerse your hips and buttocks when you sit in it.

3. Add Herbs or Salts (optional):
You can enhance the therapeutic effects by adding herbs or salts known to alleviate hemorrhoid symptoms:

  • Witch hazel: Anti-inflammatory and astringent properties can help shrink hemorrhoids.
  • Chamomile: Soothing and anti-inflammatory.
  • Lavender oil: Offers pain relief and relaxation.
  • Epsom salts: Can reduce itching and swelling.

If using herbs, consider placing them in a muslin bag to prevent debris in the water.

4. Sitz Bath Procedure:

  • Warm bath: Sit in the warm water for 3-5 minutes.
  • Cold bath: Empty some warm water and add cold water to adjust the temperature to a cool range, around 18°C (64.4°F). Immerse your hips and buttocks for about 15-30 seconds.
  • Repeat the cycle 2-3 times, always finishing with cold water.

5. Dry Off:
After completing the sitz bath, gently pat the anal area dry with a soft, clean towel. Avoid rubbing or scrubbing as this may exacerbate the hemorrhoids.

6. Apply a Natural Ointment (optional):
Consider applying a soothing ointment or gel containing ingredients like aloe vera, calendula, or witch hazel to the affected area.

7. Clean the Tub:
After the bath, ensure you clean the tub or basin with a natural disinfectant to maintain hygiene.

Additional Tips:

  • Frequency: For acute symptoms, consider taking sitz baths 2-3 times a day. Once symptoms improve, reduce the frequency.
  • Duration: While you can take sitz baths as often as desired, it’s essential to monitor your skin for any signs of dryness or irritation and adjust frequency accordingly.
  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated and help alleviate symptoms.
