A Personal Story Battling a Deadly Disease and Opioids with Miste Gardner-Karlfeldt

In this episode of HealthMade Radio, Dr. Michael Karlfeldt interviews Miste Karlfeldt about her journey from allopathic medicine towards naturopathic healing.

As a single mother of four young children and small business owner, Miste was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease destined to move into her organs, resulting in organ failure and death. In addition, the function of her hands and feet was failing her. Miste was on a page and a half of medications, which included a heavy dosage of opioids to take the edge of her excruciating pain and be somewhat functioning. She shares the story of millions of Americans prescribed opioids only to become addicted and have no functioning medical plan to get off of these highly addictive and life-ruining medications.

The misuse of and addiction to opioids—including prescription pain relievers, heroin, and synthetic opioids such as fentanyl—is a severe national crisis that affects public health as well as social and economic welfare. For example, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that the total “economic burden” of prescription opioid misuse alone in the United States is $78.5 billion a year, including healthcare costs, lost productivity, addiction treatment, and criminal justice involvement.
