When we go to see a doctor to diagnosis a symptom or set of symptoms, we are frequently told that genetics are one of the most powerful predictors of the presence of disease. 

But did you know that emotions, trauma and experiences from previous generations in your family can impact the way your body functions, even your genetic code? Dr. Michael Karlfeldt, ND, PhD explains how previous generations in our families can impact our physical and mental well-being in numerous ways.  

We had Coach Skip Hall on the show, and he was talking about our mindset, and motivation and drivers, having that passion that will help us to reach excellence. And there’s a lot of things within us that actually can interfere with this; it can be belief systems, it can be different traumas that take place in prior parts of our lives.

Our emotional state can also be impacted by things that happened even before we were born. How that takes place is that, they actually noticed that with survivors of the Holocaust. All the people that dealt with that horrendous trauma, and they were affected physically and obviously they were dealing with a lot of emotional and mental issues from that experience. Scientists observed that these survivors saw that in the generations after, descendants of the Holocaust victims were actually dealing with the same kinds of symptoms, same kind of anxiety, the same kinds of health problems, even though they did not experience it. And what has been seen is similar to the homeopathic principle where the more it is diluted, the stronger it gets. And this was observed in the third generation, it was actually the strongest impact from what had happened prior.

So for example, the emotion fear, which is a powerful and incapacitating emotion. So you are dealing with all this fear and then you have a child. And that emotion will then alter our genetic code. So it will actually impact how our genes are made. Genes are responsible for creating protein, and proteins are the main building blocks of which our bodies are comprised. Protein also creates digestive enzymes which are considered the “workers” of the body.  Prior emotions will impact our genetic coding, which will then impacts how our proteins are made and will subsequently impact the enzymes. The enzymes that help to repair tissue, give us energy, help to kill off infection, and so many other tasks in our body.

This is why it is so crucial to remove these emotional blocks including guilt, anger, and so many different triggers. These emotions travel through family lines. For example, let’s say the liver is having a problem. Certain emotions are connected to certain organs. Anger tends to be one of the primary emotions that triggers the liver.

The way it functions is that the specific emotion will impact the different neurotransmitter components in the brain and its signalling ability. So it will actually impact the area of the brain that relates to the liver, and will decrease the amount of nutrients sent to the liver, which will decrease circulation and then lead to decrease in detoxification of the liver. This can lead to a chronic liver issue, which leads to toxic build up in the body, and contribute greatly to other chronic health issues.

Genetic issues from parents

In consideration of both sides of the family: there is the mother’s and father’s side in each generation. What has been observed is that energy production which happens in the mitochondria, is actually connected to the mother’s side, or “mother” issues. If you are dealing with “mother” issues, the energy production or ATP (Adenosine triphosphate) within the cells, which takes place within the mitochondria, is greatly reduced.

Father issues and methylation

If you are dealing with “father” issues, then it is something called methylation. Methylation has to do with the body’s ability to detoxify, which has to do with energy production, but this process is in particular linked to how your genes are coded. You can actually change the genetic makeup, depending on how your methylation takes place. This is just a small description of how your emotion can impact your physical well-being.
