Within the context of music therapy, group drumming can take many forms. It can be done individually or with a group in the form of an ensemble, an improvisation, or even a drum lesson. While there might be some similarities in appearance to other types of group drumming, music therapy interventions are a very different experience with regard to the types of interactions that happen on both a musical and personal level. Drumming in music therapy is guided first and foremost by the therapeutic needs of the client. The music therapist then shapes the intervention to address those needs and provide an accessible and engaging experience.

People that come to this group can expect an engaging and beginner friendly group drumming session. We will primarily utilize hand drums and focus on correct striking techniques, active and responsive listening, and developing rhythmic ideas. There is no prior drumming experience required.

Music Assisted Progressive Muscle Relaxation

In music music therapy, there are a variety of different techniques that can be utilized to promote stress-reduction and relaxation. One such technique is progressive muscle relaxation. This intervention utilizes the connection between the physical and mental state to promote a deep mental relaxation by systematically relaxing the body. When utilized in conjunction with clinically directed music, this experience has the potential to offer a deeper level of relaxation as well as improvements in other areas of need. Once learned, progressive muscle relaxation can be practiced individually. This is not a one time experience, but rather a skill that can be developed and utilized when needed.

  • reduced pain, including neck, back, TMJ and even migraine pain
