Toxins Making Their Way Into Food Cooked on Non-Stick Pans

Every day more toxic nonstick chemicals are being discovered in our water, food and homes. Investigation of the expanding crisis shows that the chemicals continue to threaten our children’s health, disrupting their hormones. It’s essential that we limit how much we and our kids are exposed to.

What are PFAS chemicals?

Per- or polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS, are a family of thousands of chemicals used to make nonstick – water-, grease-, and stain-repellent – coatings for a vast array of consumer goods and industrial applications. These chemicals are notoriously persistent in the environment and the body, and some have been linked to serious health hazards.

PFAS chemicals are added to some personal care products, clothing and fabrics, food packaging, and cookware. They’re found in high concentrations in firefighting foams used at airports and military bases. These substances end up in the environment after being thrown away, rinsed off or used up. Industrial facilities discharge them into air and water.

Because PFAS chemicals don’t break down, they spread. Eventually, these chemicals end up in our homes and bodies and in our children’s bodies. PFAS has been detected in food, and up to 110 million Americans could have PFAS-contaminated drinking water. Because exposure is so widespread, babies are born with detectable levels of PFAS already in their blood. EWG tests showed multiple PFAS compounds in the umbilical cord blood of all 20 babies tested.

What can we do?

The expanse of the PFAS crisis may feel insurmountable, but taking action today can reduce kids’ exposure to PFAS and limit the effect of these chemicals on their health and development. You can:

  • Filter your water, if necessary. Certified water filters may help reduce the levels of some PFAS compounds in drinking water; search for them in the EWG Water Filter Guide.
  • Choose stainless steel or cast-iron cookware over nonstick.
  • Check for PFAS in personal care products on EWG’s Skin Deep.
  • Avoid packaged food and takeout containers lined with waterproof or greaseproof coatings. Use real plates, and make popcorn the old-fashioned way.
  • Wet-mop floors and use a vacuum with a HEPA-filter to remove household dust that may contain PFAS.
  • Avoid fabrics treated with nonstick chemicals like Teflon, Scotchgard and Gore-tex, among others.

PFAS chemicals are everywhere, and they aren’t going away any time soon. Manufacturers continue to produce hundreds to thousands of these compounds, and the EPA and FDA continue to allow them. Until federal agencies step up to protect our children, use EWG’s Guide to Avoiding PFAS Chemicals to avoid PFAS in your home and keep your children safe.

Taking as many of these steps as possible will help reduce PFAS in your home, but to truly stem the tide of toxic exposures, PFAS contamination needs to be stopped at its source. New PFAS chemicals continue to come onto the market and into our environment unchecked. Learn more about must be done to clean up this crisis on the EWG PFAS Chemicals page.

Avoiding the Pharmaceutical Cover Up

Drugs and surgery are a typical treatment for health problems, but do these treatments addressing the root cause? Dr. Michael Karlfeldt, ND, PhD tells why nutritional deficiencies from a less-than-optimal diet can be a common cause of declining health and what action to take to understand why many health issues can’t be solved with the drug or surgery “band-aid”.

Something that I find to be a conundrum is when a person comes in with a health issue and expresses a desire to resolve with a pharmaceutical drug to fix symptoms or pain. In reality, what is happening is nutritional deficiencies and an added chemical to try to “correct” the deficiency. In doing this with a drug or conventional medical treatment, we are not addressing the cause; we are not getting to the root, but simply putting another band-aid.

An analogy for this would be not having enough money to pay for our bills, so the conventional solution is to get another credit card. As an example, a Vitamin C deficiency: if we have osteoporosis or osteopenia. It’s essentially like scurvy for the bones.  If we supply an abundance of Vitamin C intead of a drug such as Phosphomax or Aleve for the pain, we can simply add Vitamin C to prevent it. Or, instead of removing the gallbladder, it could be also a Vitamin C deficiency hindering the production and storage of bile for a healthy functioning gallbladder to be able to digest fats. The same would also be true of cardiovascular health.

A naturopathic healthcare’s goal is to not only reduce and alleviate symptoms, but to find and fix the root of the problem so that you can experience as much freedom from those health conditions as possible.

Because naturopathy focuses on the root cause, no matter what your condition, we can likely help!

Quantum Living and the Exploration of Wholeness

Dr. Amit Goswami, a pioneer of this revolutionary new perspective within science. He shares with us his vision of the unlimited potential of consciousness as the ground of all being and how this revelation can actually help us to live better. On HealthMade Radio, Dr. Michael Karlfeldt interviews Dr. Amit Goswami who explains how Quantum Physics, Quantum Medicine, and Quantum Healing needs to be integrated with conventional medicine.

Learn more about Quantum Healing:

  • Find out what Dr. Goswami believes is the greatest downfall to conventional/modern medicine
  • Understand the Holistic Way of thinking called Quantum Healing . The basic ideas thatwe are more than just ‘hardware’ organs and cells but also ‘software’ part which includes psychology, philosophy, and neuro-physiology that are responsible for health and well being.
  • Learn what insights of creativity and the mystery of the subconscious

Theoretical Quantum Physicist Dr. Amit Goswami is a retired full professor from the University of Oregon’s Department of Physics where he served from 1968 to 1997. He is a pioneer of the new paradigm of science called “science within consciousness,” an idea he explicated in his seminal book, The Self-Aware Universe, where he also solved the quantum measurement problem elucidating the famous observer effect.

If any field needs an integrative paradigm that can make sense out of all the different models of healing, it is medicine.

Dr. Amit Goswami, PhD The Quantum Doctor: A Physicist’s Guide to Health and Healing

Goswami has written several other popular books based on his research on quantum physics and consciousness. In The Quantum Doctor, Goswami sought to integrate both conventional and alternative medicine. In Creative Evolution, Goswami presented a resolution between Darwinism and the intelligent design of life. In God is Not Dead, he asserted that not only are science and religion compatible but that quantum physics proves the existence of God. In his most recent book, The Everything Answer Book, Goswami’s basic premise is that quantum physics is not only the future of science, but it is also the key to understanding consciousness, death, God, psychology, and the meaning of life.

Recognizing a widespread need to implement the solutions presented by quantum physics to global crises in economics, politics, education, the environment, and healthcare, Goswami and his colleagues have launched Quantum Activism Vishwalayam (in Sanskrit, home of the world), a trans-formative institution of higher learning based in Jaipur, India which will offer students primarily online post-graduate level transformational training in consciousness and the quantum worldview with an emphasis on quantum living and the exploration of wholeness in their professional pursuits.

In his private life, Goswami is a practitioner of spirituality and transformation. He calls himself a quantum activist. He appeared in the film What the Bleep Do We Know!? and its sequel Down the Rabbit Hole as well as the documentaries Dalai Lama Renaissance and the award-winning The Quantum Activist.

When a Video Gaming Habit Becomes an Addiction

On this episode of HealthMade Radio, Dr. Michael Karlfeldt discuss video game addiction symptoms, causes, and effects with former game addict Dr. Sam Shay. Although it is not yet recognized by the American Medical Association as a diagnosable disorder, video game addiction is a very real problem for many people. Dr.Sam Shay coped with the stress by developing a strong addiction to video games. Whenever he wasn’t studying, he would play for hours and hours.

Video game addiction is a serious disorder characterized by excessive gameplay and disturbances in normal life functioning.

For the past 17 years, Sam has devoted his life to health and science, learning how to heal himself through natural medicine. He now applies those same principles to his patients in the clinic and to his coaching clients online.  Dr. Shay discusses how video game addiction has an emotional component, hypothesizing that some compulsive gamers use gaming as a way to escape their problems. Much like some people who suffer from alcoholism drink to escape emotional pain, a person addicted to video games may use gaming as a way to bury their emotions. He discusses his own cycle of escape through video games.

In this episode learn why are people are addicted to video games and what makes them so compelling?

  • Why video gaming addiction is ‘easily acquired’
  • The 9 signs of a ‘gaming disorder’
  • The physical and mental health detriments of long-term video gaming
  • 4 simple steps to help wean from a gaming addiction

Probiotics are healthy, friendly, good bacteria living in our digestive tracts, which are responsible for nutrient absorption, breaking down our foods and supporting our immune system.

Our brains and bodies are constantly overloaded with toxins and stressors. Everyone needs a basic multivitamin and mineral supplement.

Omega fatty oils are essential for key functions in our bodies.

Discover the impressive power of Curcumin! This spice literally does it all: a powerful antioxidant, fights inflammation, improves brain function, elevates mood, supports detoxification, and much more.

Prolozone Therapy

Pain persists as long as connective tissue in a joint remains damaged. Prolozone therapy can heal that joint damage.

Prolozone therapy injections stimulate tissue to repair itself, strengthening and tightening, and ultimately stabilizing the joint. Prolozone therapy involves the injections of ozone into soft tissues, ligaments, and tendons. This causes a localized inflammation in these weak areas, which then increases the blood supply and flow of nutrients, the stimulation of anabolic cells, fibroblasts, osteoblasts, and chondroblasts. These effects stimulate the tissue to repair itself, strengthening and tightening, and thereby stabilizing the area.

Anyone dealing with Low Back Pain, Shoulder Pain, Rotator Cuff Tears, Knee Injuries, wanting to avoid knee and hip replacement is a candidate for prolozone therapy. Because prolozone treatments also result in cartilage regeneration, the technique is also remarkably effective even for severe cases of osteo-arthritis of the hip or knee and can also assist those who wish to avoid a hip or knee replacement.

Some of the more powerful applications of ozone therapy that we use at The Karlfeldt Center include:

  1. Ten Pass Ozone Therapy is a powerful tool for anti-aging, while fighting inflammation or struggling from chronic disease.
  2. Ultraviolet blood irradiation (UBI) is an IV that filters and re-oxygenates the bloodstream, killing infectious agents, promoting antioxidants and acting as a personalized immune booster.
  3. Prolozone injections into the joints supports tissue regeneration. It could help before considering surgery.
  4. The ozone sauna, also known as the HOCATT, floods the body with ozone through the skin creating a whole-body effect that can eliminate toxins, increase circulation and act as an anti-aging treatment.
  5. Ozone bags can be filled and given via the intestines for colon or liver issues, inserted in the bladder while dealing with a UTI, or bagged around a wound to kill infection and promote healing.

At your next visit to the Karlfeldt Center or another naturopathic clinic, ask about options for ozone therapy. Its versatility makes ozone a very effective and individualized form of medicine and when used correctly by the well-trained staff here, can make a world of difference in your healing journey.

How Stress Can Cause Back Pain and What To Do About It

When we’re overwhelmed, our bodies tend to react. In fact, certain emotional trauma can cause serious back pain. Stress is one of those things that we all deal with, but often don’t realize just how it’s affecting us physically and impacting our health.

Stress happens when you have more going on than you can handle. It may be too much work to do, or it may be trouble with children or a spouse or even a coworker! Financial troubles are another major cause of stress.

What is Stress Doing To You?

We all handle or “hold” stress in different ways. Some people deal with their stress mentally, thinking so much about a problem that they can’t focus on anything else.

Other people hold stress in their body. This frequently affects your back, starting out with minor pain from tightening your muscles, and resulting in muscles that get tighter and more painful the longer you are stressed.

This often triggers lower back pain, shoulder, or neck pain. Often, the pain results in more stress, more tension, and even more pain until movement is limited.

What Should You Do?

Stay Hydrated

Hydration impacts every single area of our lives, including our ability to cope with stress. Especially when stress is affecting your physical body, it’s vital to drink enough water daily to keep your muscles and joints healthy.

Visit a Chiropractor

Your Chiropractor can’t reduce your stress levels, but he can help you loosen up muscles and joints and restore proper circulation. This will open the neurological pathways and help your body communicate with itself more efficiently!

Seeing a Chiropractor is the first thing you should consider when you’re dealing with back pain, regardless of the cause. Regular adjustments are one way to maintain your overall wellbeing.

Lowering Your Stress Levels

The relationship between the physical body and the emotional state is crucial to understanding how to deal with the cycle of pain that often results from stress. This pain cycle starts by limiting daily functions, causing additional stress as your body refuses to respond with its usual speed. This adds worry to the already stressed mind, contributing to even more pain as the body tenses more.

Eventually, this can lead to even more problems, including adrenal fatigue and depression.

Don’t let stress-induced back pain keep you down! Here are a few ways to reduce your stress levels that are good for your health:

Do you need to see a Chiropractor, Massage Therapist, or get Nutritional advice? Here at the Karlfeldt Center, we have lots of options to increase your overall health and to reduce stress and physical pain in the most natural ways possible!
