On this episode of HealthMade Radio, Dr. Karlfeldt interviews D. Judy Mikovits on the health benefits of CBD and Cannabis and its affect on the recently discovered human endocannabinoid system.

What is the Endocannabinoid System? The endocannabinoid system is a network of internally occurring components that play an important role in our inner biological system.

It is responsible for regulating and balancing (homeostatis) the response of the human body to certain triggers. Such as appetite, metabolism, immune change, communication between body cells and lots more.

endocannabinoid system plays a huge role in the physical and psychological effects of cannabis in the human body.

It is through this system that the active components of cannabis, which are referred to as cannabinoids, interact with our body’s biological system and elicit its beneficial effects.

It was thus named after the active components. Endo (which means within the body) and Cannabinoid (the active ingredient that it acts upon).

The endocannabinoid system has a great potential to alter the way the human body works and a fully functional one is essential to have a healthy and balanced body system.

This system is a major focal point of medical research because of its widespread therapeutic potential. Although medical researchers have discovered the basics of how this amazing system works, there are still more left to be discovered.

Dr. Judy A. Mikovits earned a BA in Chemistry with a specialization in biology from the University of Virginia in 1980 and a PhD in biochemistry and molecular biology from George Washington University in 1992. Upon graduation from UVA, she went directly to the National Cancer Institute in Frederick Maryland where she developed purification methods for Interferon alpha. It was this Interferon which was used in the first immune therapy treatment for hairy cell leukemia in 1986.  In 1986-7, prior to enrolling in graduate school, she went to Upjohn Pharmaceuticals in Kalamazoo Michigan to develop production methods to ensure biological materials manufactured using human blood products were free of contamination from HIV-1.  Her PhD thesis defense entitled  “Negative Regulation of HIV Expression in Monocytes” changed the paradigm for therapeutic treatment of HIV. For this work, she was awarded the graduate student of the year in 1991.  In her thirty-five-year quest to understand and develop therapies for chronic diseases, she has co-authored seminal papers culminating at least a decade of research in each of four fields: immunology, natural products chemistry, epigenetics, and HIV/AIDs drug development. Her book, Plague, is about one scientist’s intrepid search for the truth about human retroviruses and chronic fatigue syndrome, autism and other diseases.
